Ross Telescope 'detail I'
A very large brass Victorian telescope by Ross of London circa 1880. The scope is mounted on the original turned brass column fixed to a period mahogany tripod of suitably grand proportions. As an alternative arrangement the telescope can be taken off the wooden tripod and mounted on three separately cast brass short tripod legs which attach to the brass column to facilitate comfortable viewing from a library or conservatory table. This marvellous instrument also comes with an assortment of lenses for celestial (star gazing) and terrestrial (landscape) purposes. Beautifully engineered, the sighting mechanisms and fine adjusters are a credit to the craftsmanship encouraged by the firm of Ross who remained at the forefront of the English optical industry well into the twentieth century. The telescope comes complete with its original dark stained pine carrying case for transport or storage. Dimensions 155 cm/61 inches (length) x 205 cm/81 inches (height of column). [GH]
